Keys to Winning in No Limit
Although the rules are the same, the skills and ingredients that you will need to win in No Limit are much more complex and numerous. If you are just beginning to play the game, it is very important that you know which parts of the game you need to work on early.
One of these No Limit skills that you will need to learn are the utilization of pot odds. For example, if the pot has not been raised, it would be a good idea to call it, even if you are holding a 66. If you go to the flop and you get the set, then the odds are very high that you will get a lot of money because your hand is very difficult to detect.
However, the same cannot be said if you are holding a 4 flush draw on the river. This is even more so if, say, you have to bet $15 to win a $40 pot. Not only are you risking a lot of money for so little, but the odds of completing the flush on the river is 5 to 1.
Another No Limit strategy that you will have to be careful with is check raising. This is something that can be useful and profitable if you have the big hand, but it can also backfire if you end up giving a free card that ends up giving your opponent the winning hand.
Calling is a strategy that you often use when playing Limit Holdem, but it is something that you will want to use judiciously in No Limit. The reason is that when you call, you will only be able to win if your opponent has an inferior hand. But by betting, you will be able to seize control of the hand by determining the odds and the betting.
Finally, in No Limit, more so than any other, is the concept of player reading so important. A lot of times it is not so much the player with the best cards that win, but the one that is able to mentally outplay his opponent.
It is not enough to simply have the best hand; to become a consistent No Limit winner, you will also have to learn how to judge the kind of hand your opponent has, and also manipulate his thinking; make him think that you have a weak hand.
Doubtless, these are No Limit skills that will not be learned overnight, and it will take a lot of practice and games. You will, however, by persevering, develop them. And as you gain more experience, you will be become more adept at them, which will lead to more big money victories.
